Unlike traditional spray tan solutions, clear spray tan do not contains cosmetic bronzers, meaning there is no guide colour sitting on the skin during development. This creates a cleaner feel on the skin, but it also means the tan requires more awareness during the developing stage.

Important: Clear Spray Tan Is NOT Transfer Proof

Many brands market clear spray tan as “transfer proof.”❌

In reality, no spray tan or self tan can ever be guaranteed completely transfer proof, even after the first rinse and once the tan is fully developed.

​

A clear spray tan may be more transfer resistant, but it can still transfer onto light or white clothing.

This happens because spray tan develops within the outer layer of the skin (the epidermis). As the skin naturally sheds, dead skin cells containing developed tan pigment are also shed.This is exactly why proper skin preparation and exfoliation before a spray tan is so important.

When tight clothing, bras, straps, or fabrics rub against the skin, those dead tanned skin cells may transfer onto the material.

What transfers is not the cosmetic bronzer guide colour, it is simply dead skin cells carrying developed tan pigment.

The idea that clear solutions are specifically “created for brides” feels more like marketing than actual skin science.

Why Skin Preparation Matters More Than Clear vs Bronzer

What actually happens is:

• tight clothing rubs against the skin

• dead skin cells naturally shed (skin lifecycle)

• friction lifts those skin cells onto fabric

What you may see on clothing or bedding after few days is not the bronzer itself, it is simply dead skin transfer.

It is similar to how white bras or white clothing naturally become dull over time from contact with skin, body oils, skincare, and dead skin cell build-up.

Why I do NOT recommend clear Spray Tan for first-time clients or brides

Although clear spray tan can work beautifully for any skin type, it is not always the best choice when someone wants the most flawless, controlled, and fool-proof result possible.

With a traditional bronzer-based spray tan, both the client and the spray tan artist can clearly see how the tan is developing on the skin. With a clear solution, that visual guidance is removed.

This means:

• you may not notice where clothing or a seat belt has rubbed against the developing tan

• sweat marks or accidental water splashes may not be visible immediately

• correcting issues during development becomes much harder

• rinsing the tan evenly can be more difficult because you cannot see what is washing away

This last point is extremely important.

When a spray tan contains cosmetic bronzers, you can visually see the guide colour rinsing away in the shower. This helps clients rinse the skin more evenly and thoroughly.

With a clear solution, there is no visual guide during rinsing.

As a result, some areas especially: back of arms, back, back of legs can accidentally be under-rinsed.

Several hours later, this may appear as streaks and uneven development caused during the rinse process itself.

For this reason, I usually recommend bronzer-based spray tan solutions for: first-time spray tan clients and brides.

In my professional experience, bronzer-based solutions simply allow more control and easier troubleshooting especially for special occasions.
