Choosing Your Shade – From Light Glow to Dark Competition Tan
Your dance competition tan can be customised to your preference. From a soft, natural glow to a deep, dark stage tan.
However, it is important to set realistic expectations:
Skin Type Matters If you are very pale (Skin Type 1), your skin has natural limitations and may not achieve an ultra-dark result, even with a strong spray tan solution. A spray tan is not paint it is reaction in the skin, and the final shade depends on your own skin chemistry.
For Those Wanting an Ultra-Dark Stage Finish
If your skin cannot naturally achieve a very dark result, I highly recommend bringing or purchasing Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs – Dark.
This body makeup spray is ideal for adding extra depth and coverage on competition day.
Multiple-Day Competitions & Younger Dancers
Dance events often last several days, and multiple showers, tight costumes, sweating and friction can cause the tan to fade more quickly especially on children and teens, as young skin naturally sheds faster than older skin.
To maintain the colour:
-
Consider purchasing a gradual tan lotion at your appointment. (Apply a light layer every 2 days to keep the tan topped up and even)
-
Use loose clothing whenever possible to reduce rub-off
These steps help keep the tan looking smooth and fresh throughout multi-day events.
Choosing a Dark Tan? Know What to Expect
Darker shades look beautiful on stage, but they also show fading more visibly.
To support a smooth fade:
-
Moisturise daily once the tan has developed
-
Avoid aggressive scrubbing
-
You can purchase a tan remover at your appointment to help improve the fading process and avoid patchiness
Children’s Dance Tan – Safety & Comfort First
Children must remain in their own underwear during the spray tan. They may be topless, but a parent or guardian must be present in the room at all times for comfort, safety and safeguarding.
When to Book Your Dance Tan
A spray tan takes up to 24 hours to fully develop and actually looks its best after 48 hours.
To achieve the richest, smoothest colour on stage, I recommend booking your tan:
✔ Two days before the competition
This allows the colour to deepen, settle and achieve its most even, beautiful finish.
Before Care & After Care for Dance Competition Spray Tan
Your before care and after care for a dance competition tan are the same as your standard everyday spray tan – however, because dancers move more, sweat more, and often wear tight costumes, following these steps becomes even more important for a flawless and long-lasting result. Please check "before care" and "after care" page.
